Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatia)

Thursday 3rd - Saturday 5th July 2014
Here is our blog for Plitvice Lakes - click on the menu to the right to look at snaps from our 19 other blogs

Buffet in quality restaurant in Croatia? - no it is the typical diner attached to most service stations - we had a fresh orange juice and a fresh berry juice - not a chiko roll in sight!

Chief tour guide planning our visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It cost $A36 in peak season (July/Aug) each for a day pass (includes boat & bus transport) (only $A22 shoulder season) but if staying at a hotel inside the park (like we did at Plitvice Hotel) they stamp each extra day for free. They get up to 9000 visitors a day in peak season.

Great reflections - looked better in real life

Heaps of trout in the lakes

Ferry transport included in entrance fee

While I was trying to photograph this baby snake I forgot to check for the mother snake and sure enough she was there pointing in my direction - idiot

So much water must be one of the best National Parks in the world (outside of Tassie of course)

On our main day we caught the bus up to station 3 (marked 4 on some maps) and followed route H all the way down to the main lake then caught the long ferry trip and followed route H again to the big falls then walked to station 1 and caught the bus back (we could have walked back that section too but had already done so the previous day). It took maybe 6 hours hours including lunch, the buses, the boat and lots of photo stops. Probably most people visit the Park as a single day trip and and there are lots of places to stay on all the access roads that are probably cheaper than on site.

Nice red tips

Imagine the sound of water everywhere no matter how far you walk

Wildlife and birds everywhere - just like in Tassie

Testing the self timer on the new camera

Great boardwalk and they must have got wet feet building it - it went right through and over lots of great wet spots and was often only an inch above the water
Lots of hard to photograph butterflies

Just like Tassie

This photo took a few shots to capture (dragonfly? they were everywhere)

Great colours due to the mineral content in the water

Dogs are allowed in restaurants, on trains and even in pristine UNESCO National Parks. They all seem very well behaved, I guess due to being taken everywhere and always amongst people

Duck down

Lots of these forest mice

A lot of water drops a long way and you can walk in amongst it everywhere

Fast Lizard

They even have brown bears - 150kg males and 100kg females that mostly eat plants and not tourists

Had a great time in Plitvice and it is a must on a Croatian visit. We stayed at Plitvice Hotel which despite being only 2 star was really good and just 400m walk to bus station number 2. Rooms were big. No air conditioning meant it was a bit hot to sleep and couldn't open the windows as heaps of mossies. Restaurant was great.
