through Kilkenny to the Cork races (Ireland)

Notes - click on the links to the right in 'blog archive' for our other 25+ blogs. We are writing this for our family & friends and to have a record of our trip but if it helps anyone plan their trip or bring back memories that's great too.

to Kilkenny 2nd August and beyond to the Cork races
Headed off from Trim to Kilkenny for one night Aspect Hotel on 2nd August. Stopped at a few castles and then to Mallow for two nights Hibernian Hotel which is where the Cork races were on. We paid 45 Euros for a set lunch with a table in the members and had a great day. 7 hurdle races and then a flat race over 3500m so a lot different to our racing. Then drove through Cork the next day.

Durrow Scarecrow Festival - must have been 500 exhibits all around the town, in shop windows, parks, paddocks - just everywhere.

Round bale of hay can be a sunflower
Kilkenny Castle - no photos allowed inside at a lot of places

Kilkenny castle gardens

Rock of Cashel church

Cahir Castle

Another day another tour of a castle but they are all interesting

This set of antlers is over 6000 years old preserved in peat from an extinct giant deer

Shut the gate - quick!

Natural moat on one side

We got the key to the cemetery from O'Brien's pub

American Oliver Reed liked O'Brien's pub so much he wanted to be buried here

Statue on the roundabout outside O'Brien's pub

Don't even have to get up to lose your money at the Cork races

Plenty of bookies - each umbrella is a bookie - plus the tote and a large Paddy Power stall inside

Pretty good race crowd

Mounting yard

Great two piece band at Danny Mann's pub. There is another room to the right with speakers and TV screens. They even sang 'The Wild Colonial Boy' and two songs with 'Van Diemens Land' in the lyrics. At another pub when I was having a chat to a guy about AFL International rules etc. he asked if Tasmania was Van Diemens Land which I thought was strange but now I know why.

Irish Dancing demo but she moved a big quick for the camera but notice her face stays still

Beautiful tubs of flowers everywhere in Ireland even on this bridge
